Ceiling drywall that sags between struts or trusses is sometimes called “pillow” drywall.

If your drywall ceiling sags between the struts, sometimes called a “pillow”, it may be on the top floor and attached to the roof trusses. If so, I bet the installers used 1/2 in. drywall instead of 5/8 in. Half-inch drywall can sag if hung under roof trusses 24 inches apart. It’s not strong enough to support the span, and the weight of the insulation in the attic only makes the sag worse.

You only have two choices: rip it out and replace it with 5/8″ drywall or add new spacers and 5/8″ drywall underneath. Tearing down old stuff is the safest approach. but it’s a nightmarish job. You have to pry the drywall ceiling along the edges and remove all the old drywall screws. As if that wasn’t interesting enough, the attic insulation could crack. collapse in the room.

If you can live with a lower ceiling height, you can save a lot of time by installing a new ceiling below the old one. Add the 1 x edging strips (on 16 inch centers) shown in Figure A. Use 1x3s instead of 1x2s as this makes the drywall more prone to snagging. (But if your ceiling sinks more than 3/4 inch, use 2x2s.) Screw the 1x3s into the grid frame with 2-1/2 inches. Drywall screws are spaced 2 feet apart. Then install and glue and finish the new 5/8-in. Drywall. If you have furniture on the ceiling, you will need to enlarge all the boxes so that they are flush with the new ceiling.

Figure A: Easy ceiling repair

Screw the 1x3s into the old ceiling trusses, then install the new 5/8″. Drywall.
